A note of art

Something that was handed to me the other day as some change really made me laugh.  It wasn’t until I went to go and spend it I realised someone had been having some fun with the queens face on the $5 aussie bank note.

Obviously very bored and probably in a pub with their mates, they had scratched off the poor queens eyebrows, eye’s and top lip and and pencilled in what made her look like a right angry old cow!

Well it made me laugh and I’m reluctant to spend it now as it makes me chuckle every time I see it 🙂 I think mum used to always say to me ‘little things please little minds’, she’s right.

Mardi Gras 2010 Video

27th Feb was the date for this years Sydney Mardi Gras parade, one of the worlds most famous street parties. Our new place in the city has 2 bedrooms that back right onto Oxford St and being 3 levels up was a perfect place to watch the parade from. 18 friends came over to join us for some food and drinks and to watch the parade from the bedroom windows and we all had a good time.

Here is a 10 minute collection of some of the best bits I filmed of the parade. Enjoy the madcap craziness of the Sydney Mardi Gras as the infamous ‘Team leader’ controls the crowds with her takedown shouting Megaphone skills, you’ll see what I mean:

One person that loved watching the whole parade was little Basima before she fell asleep on the ‘Lovesac’, I couldn’t think of a more comfortable place to sleep:

NYE 2009 in Sydney

Always the unplanned evenings are the best. We were invited to a friend’s concrete patch by the water where he stores his racing yacht out of water (was made of 100% carbon fibre, was very impressed), a barbie would be there but no view of the bridge was promised.

We turned up and there really was a great view of the bridge in fact. After a few hours of drinking, eating, laughing and dealing with around 20 Irish guys trying to jump the security fence to get in our secure compound area we were in, our evening got even better.

With a big electric crane our hosts lifted 2 yachts into the water at 11:15pm and by 11:55pm we were on the front line drifting right in front of the bridge. We were jumping up and down on the deck like little kids. We were in the best city in the world for NYE and we were so lucky to have the BEST seat in the whole of Sydney.

Considering it was a very unplanned NYE, it was the best NYE we’ve ever had! Now have to deal with the ritual hangover the day after.

Happy New Year to all my friends
and family all over the world!

Sydney to Gong ride photos – We went well

Sanna and I successfully completed the 90km Sydney to Wollongong bike ride on Sunday morning! To prove to all you lovely people who sponsored me here are some photos and to tell you how we went.

On the train to the start line and still waking up

It was a early start at 6:00am to be up for a Sunday but we had our power breakfast ready that we always have before doing a big sporting event. It consists of 2 slices of wholemeal bread with a banana sliced up and lots of honey.

We got on the train to the start line at St Peters park from central station and we officially crossed the Start line at 7:25am.

The first hour was very congested with other riders, nestling on the road for a space in amongst the 9,998 other riders. While we were in the city also we were all stopped by a lot Red traffic lights.

01112009114

In the first hour of riding and there was a lot of congestion

Once we were out of the city though the riders all broke up and distanced themselves a bit and we were free to ride at a good pace we were comfortable at.  Sanna was doing really well and struggled on a few of the steep long hills a little of the royal national park but overall she rode much faster than I thought she would.

01112009117

during the morning tea break quick break

We didn’t stop eating through the ride, in the morning there was morning tea with a muffin with tea or coffee. Then we stopped halfway in the royal national park for a quick sausage sizzle in a roll with barbeque sauce. Then 3/4 of the way we stopped for Gatorade drink and fresh apples, oranges and bananas.

Lunchtime, quick sausage sizzle in a roll with barbeque sauce

There was a guy dressed up as Borat riding along the way which was grossing everyone out. I told him with that green man-kini up his bum if he farted he would whistle, he told me he know and he’s been holding them in all the way. 🙂

01112009118

Borat on a bike! thank god he had the pink pants on!

We crossed the line at 1:00pm so we we did it in 5 and a half hours including all the breaks.

We made it together

Thank you gratefully for the 11 people who sponsored me for the days ride who were:
(in no particular order)

Antonio Santucci,
Greggy,
Barry Mather,
Cameron Long,
Paul Whitman,
Simon Caruso,
Rols,
Terry Bedford,
Damien Huet,
Mad & Loic

and whoever you are that just listed your name as ‘So close… – Who would do that?’

Next year I may attempt the ride again for a 3rd year but next time I may try to aim for a competitive time and ride as quick a time as my legs will take me.

Red mist descending

We woke up today to have this Red glow coming through the windows, it was very strange like something out of a movie. We turned on the TV to see the news to find out what’s happening and they said it was Red dust blown all the way down from the NT thousands of miles away.

View from our bedroom looking down Oxford St

There is thin layer of dust on everything from cars to pavements. Even indoors we could taste it a little in our mouths and our noses. It’s now 11am and its cleared by about half and I can now just about see the buildings in the distance on the harbours edge through the Red fog. Very strange, Sanna said she’s never seen it before.

The course is 90km in total and after you leave the flat parts of Sydney city you get out into the countryside and there are some good sized hills to get up and down. 10,000 people are taking part in the event this year starting at 6am on the morning of the 1st of November, its a great event to take part in.

Here is the course map:

NEWS FLASH
Right I’ve decided as this is for charity, if I manage to double my target and get $400 in sponsorship I’ll do the ride as:

Damien leaves for France – the 4 year lifestyle is over

It has been several hours now since Damien has left in the taxi with his surfboard for the airport, it was a little upsetting to see him go. After living together for 4 years you become used to thinking your flatmate will be there for the future and you don’t tend to expect it to finish and come to an end I guess.

I’ve never lived with someone outside my family (and of course Sanna) ever for that long so it will be strange to adjust. Moving to our first home when we get back from holidays will help the transition I think. I told Damien I will feel a bit like he is still living in 1 Boomerang place when we move just 500 metres away to our new home on Oxford St. Even though Sanna and I always moaned at him to clear up his crumbs from his food and to do the washing up when he didn’t, we still loved him being our flatmate all this time and he always kept me company when Sanna was not around, being good friends.

Jane his *cough* friend came around tonight for an hour and talked about Damien lots, we think she really liked him a lot for the few weeks they were together at the end of his time here. Damien has talked about his decisions to return to France on his blog lenortien.over-blog.com. Google can translate it as best it can automatically from French to English, go here to have a read, Damien’s blog translated to English.

Tonight It is raining hard, as if Sydney is cleaning away the French-ness ready for the next chapter in our lives here. I hope Damien travels safely and has a happy reunion with with loved ones and family, I know in 4 years they would have missed him and now its our turn to start missing him.

Top Gear Australia Series 2 – Sanna got on screen, again!

A month ago we went along to the filming of the 2nd series of Top Gear Australia as the 1st series was a laugh to go to. It turned out to be the final episode of the series so there were some reasonably good stuff featured in the episode. This time the group was Sanna and I and friend Cameron from work.

There’s Sanna on the left right at the front the sneaky bugger

Cameron is blessed with height so he was on screen for most of the audience shots with his head poking out of the crowd for most of the episode. During the star in a reasonably priced car interview piece, the director asked Sanna to come to the front as they were setting up shot and someone said ‘it’s always the pretty ones’ 🙂 I was sent to the back being too short and too ugly for national TV and went to the back of the studio to watch the live camera feeds on the directors monitor.

all the time from 3 rows back

Gyton Grantley from the Aussie hit drama series underbelly was the star in the reasonability priced car and he came out at the very top of the celebrity lap times board. Queue Sanna’s spontaneous look of amazement just as Warren the presenter announced the lap time 🙂 I was at the back of the studio have having a good giggle watching her on the monitor.

Top Gear Australia – we got on screen

Hehe what sad people we were last night after our fortnightly barbeque at Bedford towers……. We all crowded around the TV to eagerly watch episode 7 of the first season of Top Gear Australia to hopefully see ourselves in the crowd of the Top Gear studio.

Back to 3 weeks ago and Sanna, myself, Chris and his friend Ash had bagged tickets to be in the studio for Top Gear Austrialia for a evening out to see how it all worked. We were in the Top Gear studio for 3 hours which was just a large done up hanger on the side of Bankstown aerodrome. Everyone foot shuffled around to try and get a good position, trying to get on camera in a frantic bid to try and ‘predict’ where the camera crew were going to go next to film the next shot.

usonTGAU_1

But we managed to do it, me and Sanna were in the background for all of the Porsche GT2 versus Nissan Skyline GTR feature smiling and clapping away on the directors queue like well behaved audience members. My friend Rob was there also as well as friends I saw in the queue outside from Lotus Australia and other car related contacts I have but I didn’t see them on screen, I guess we were lucky to get in shot.

Will I do it again, yeah sure it was a interesting evening, best bit was seeing them all stuff their lines up many times, its good to know their not perfect and make quite a few mistakes. I think for season two of Top Gear Australia (if they make it that far) I will request some tickets to visit again.
