Our short film for the Tropfest film festival ‘Empty’ now ready

I think I mentioned on my blog a few months ago I worked on a horror/thriller short film with director Jay Ng called ‘Empty’. This is the 2nd short film I’ve worked with him on with the 1st being ‘The Poker Table’. This time around I was the main camera operator with about 95% of the footage in the film shot by me.

Here is the short bio of the films description:

“Anna Berger has returned to work after a long hiatus. The office, however, has become a sinister place with images of death haunting her vision and the presence of a mysterious stalker. Is Anna losing her mind or is there a darker force at work?”

Unfortunately it didn’t make the cut to get into the final 16 of the Tropfest film festival out of the 100’s of entries, but we are all proud of the work we did to make it. I myself am pretty proud how it came out considering it was the 2nd film ever Jay and me had worked on together and the first time I was really director of photography. Jay did a great job of the editing as well I thought.

New years eve 2010 and new years day in Sydney

Bang!

Bang!

Last NYE we were so lucky to be on a boat with James and Shaun under the Sydney harbour bridge for the fireworks and this year we had nearly as incredible a view of the most famous NYE celebration in the world, just 200 metres to the side of the bridge. We were invited to a NYE party at Troy’s new unit in Kirribilli on the 5th floor of a building right next to the bridge.

Troy’s place right next to the Sydney harbour bridge

We had about 15-20 people come , a mix of Troy, Alison his girlfriends and my friends I invited. We had Sushi platters to eat and lots and lots of different types of alcohol of course. When we arrived Troy tried to make Mojito cocktails in his food blender and he didn’t have a muddling stick, they turned out ‘interesting’ Smile

Troy installed some free DJ software called MIXXX on his laptop plugged into the TV (my old 40” Samsung TV I sold him years ago, still going strong) and it was so complicated to use, only Troy and me knew how to change songs. I couldn’t DJ on it though as its near impossible to mix without some headphones for cueing, if your a DJ you’ll know what I mean. It didn’t stop me pumping out some old classics like ‘Blackbox – Ride on time’ from the 90’s though!

The midnight fireworks were awesome as usual, the best NYE celebrations in the world (so they say) and they are never a let down, they lasted for about 15 minutes.

We left the party at 2am and walked back to the train station where there were a group of Indians around 40-50 having a bit of a Indian NYE rave it seemed with live drums and a DJ, it sounded really good. I stood there watching and took a video as it was a really good vibe in this outdoor party, like a little bit of India away from home it felt. All of a sudden a hot sweaty Indian man grabbed me by the arm and dragged me into the party and ushered me to dance, so I did, in the style of the other with their hands above their heads pushing up the sky.

New Years Day

Ah waking up to a new year, to 2011, new opportunities new challenges in life. A bit hung over we went to the nice cafe over the road for some cooked breakfast and then we headed to one
of the smaller Sydney eastern suburbs local beaches. No tourists on this beach, just all aussie’s chilling out in the hot 30 degrees new years day sun. I laid in the shade all afternoon reading my car magazine, it was too hot for me with a hangover.

Christmas Day and Boxing day in the Hunter Valley

Hello all, we went to the Hunter Valley just 1 hour 45 minutes North of Sydney to a small town called Bellbird for Christmas this year, you can see where it is on the map below, not too far North of Sydney. Sanna’s cousin Tanya and her boyfriend (now her fiancé) live there in a house with their 2 dogs Zen and Missy. The hunter valley is very famous for being one of Australia’s largest wine areas and the entire area is covered in wineries and cellar doors everywhere, but most were closed during our visit to the area.

Bellbird North of Sydney

Sanna and I both finished work on Christmas eve at 1pm and dashed home for showers and then loaded up the RS4. With both the back seats down we nearly filled it up with camping gear, food and presents, it must have weighed nearly 100kg’s of stuff in the back!

As I said we stayed at Tanya and Jeremy’s house all made of wood and had a lot of land out the back not just the small garden you can see in the photo below. Sanna and I, her mum and some other friends camped out on the grass on the land, Susie and Daniel the kids in their caravan they brought with them and Hanna joined them, and Sanna’s cousin Nick stayed in the spare room in the house. There were 11 adults and 5 kids, so it was a big Christmas gathering and we all stayed for 3 days.

With so many people staying over for Christmas, there were so many presents under the Christmas tree as you can see in the below photo, and this photo doesn’t show the other half of the presents that where behind the sofa to the left of the bike. There were so many presetns the front door was blocked off and everyone used the back door to get in and out.

Lots of pressies under the tree

In the morning before we opened the presents we were all asking the kids if they had been good that year and if they deserved their presents and I’ve never seen them act so quiet and good. Look at the big kid on the right excited for her presents.

Presents time!

Presents time and chaos!

After presents time we got out the Slip ‘n Slide water game for the kids, a aussie backyard favourite. I was the only adult to give it a go to show the kids how to do it. I did it 4 times and then, I didn’t find out to much later I did some damage to my left side ribs from jumping and landing on my front as I was in pain for days afterwards. When we got back to Sydney I had to go to the emergency ward at the St Richards Sydney hospital and they did ECG heart scans and chest x-rays but it was just bruising around the ribs so I’m ok.

I made up a little camp in the back garden for the kids but they all got upset and didn’t want to share and it lead to arguments.

For dinner we had all the usual bits and pieces for Christmas lunch like Turkey and Cranberry sauce also there was roast beef, ham and apple sauce, lots and lots of other things.

For breakfast on boxing day morning we had crispy bacon and tomatoes on the barbie, omelettes, bread rolls, and mushrooms yum!

On boxing day, Sanna Nick and I took the RS4 out to find the highest lookout we could in the area to look the valley and the vineyards. The last bit of the track was pretty steep and really muddy as the weather was wet and the car got up it fine with us 3 inside and still lots of camping gear in the back which I was impressed with. Nick found a small hole that he thought he saw a spider run into so he put a blade of grass down the hole to try and make it come out the crazy man.

December edition of Supercar Spin & some viewers stats

Note, all the official Supercar Spin articles will be on www.supercarspin.com from now on.

The December edition of Supercar Spin is now available, well to tell the truth its been up for 2 weeks now but I’ve been lazy to get to my blog. We filmed it back at the ‘Zonda’ studio again, much better sound, not so echo’y and a great drive through the Royal national park in the RS4 to get there, camera gear sliding around in the back.

You can watch the episode as usual on YouTube above (here’s a link to it in HD) or by watching and subscribing to it in iTunes below:

Supercar Spin Monthly news show on iTunes

I have finally got some realistic viewers stats working with the help of the Blubrry.com stats logging service.  This is good as we can see what sort of devices people are watching it on like iPhones, other phones and iPads and what country there from e.t.c. It seems that people arn’t watching Supercar Spin on YouTube but thousands are on iTunes on their mobile devices.

Here you can see all our episodes so far from the Pilot episode to the latest which is Dec10, the latest episode of Dec is more popular than the Nov one which is what we want to see!:

scssummarystats.jpgHere is an interesting one, where everyone is watching the episodes from. It’s the Asians that are gobbling up our episodes the most; I would think the reason for this is that mobile entertainment through media consumption is so popular in Asia with its mobile data the fastest and best in the world. I think everyone has better than 3G connections there so everyone is walking around watching video on demand shows and podcasts like Supercar Spin.

We just tackled episode 2, well strictly episode 4 if you include the pilot show and the Lotus Paris show special. I was just getting over my cold and we filmed it the day before the Sydney to Gong ride at mine not Brendon’s this time to better fit in with our busy schedule over that weekend. The problem with mine is its a very large room, so there is a bit of echo through the recording but its not too bad. Things we have done/improved for this episode were:

  • Slightly altered the into sequence most noticeable with the longer music.
  • Floating ‘supercar spin’ word and sound effects special effect in the outro.
  • We both use the laptop setup just under the camera lens for a cheap autocue. Last month Brendon used he laptop ‘autocue’ and I used paper so I was looking down at the paper too much.
  • For the intro and outro ‘wrap up’ sections we practiced both saying individual lines to make more interaction between us in these 2 parts.

imageExample Intro autocue slide

Comments so far from friends and family have been really positive on this episode with everyone saying its the best and most professional looking one so far, but I’m sure we can make it even better still with more practice. We clocked up nearly 200 watches on people iPods and iPhones through iTunes on just the first day which is really good.

Click the video below to watch, or you can watch it on YouTube in HD also, make sure you watch the HD version full screen to get the quality.

Sydney to Gong road ride 2010

Brendon and I rode the Sydney to Gong event for MS Australia again this year. It was my 3rd time doing the event but the first time for Brendon. I was just getting over my horrible cold from last week and I knew it would make me 100% better or worse, luckily I kicked it out my system like I was hoping. We fitted semi-slick thin road tyres to our mountain bikes and away we went. If you don’t know the route we rode from Sydney to Wollongong aka the ‘Gong’ here it is.

Brendon said it was easier than he thought it would be (road riding is much easier than off-road riding) and we discussed that in future years we would do it different. Either do it as  race and try and get the quickest time, do it dressed up possibly something to do with the new business, or ride to the gong and back to Sydney again for a long distance challenge.

Back Camera

I did something sensible with cars for a change, I actually had a hard think about what I’m going to need to do in the coming years with the business and my cars. I realised that I need a practical car to shift stock and other items around in case of an emergency when suppliers cant deliver and I’m sure all other kinds of reasons.

Its for this reason an estate car or station wagon or ‘wagon’ for short in the Australian dictionary was invented. Now when you think along the lines of wagons (estates) for the petrol head there’s some good Subaru’s, some really good VW’s especially the R36 and then for the real petrol head there’s the BWM M3/M5 touring and in the other stable the Audi RS4 & RS6.

Now the RS6 is as rare as hens teeth and costs around $300,000 on the road for a used one in Australia, so its in the kind of ‘don’t go there’ territory of just the filthy rich. The RS4 though, much more affordable on the used car market at just under half the cost and is still rare enough but it is one if those ‘sleeper’ cars where only people who seem to watch Top Gear know what a monster of a car it is. It also has the added bonus of whenever a BMW M3 owner pulls up next to you, they realise the other person bought the ‘cooler’ car out of the 2.

So, living in the city I don’t have the space for 3 cars and so my lovely Exige S which I only just bought 5 months ago has to go to a new home. I hope to return to a Lotus again one day in the future, they have to be the most fun cars I’ve ever had the pleasure to own.

Back Camera

Yay Mark you made the right choice!

Back to the RS4. I found this Sprint Blue RS4 ‘Avant’ as the wagon (estate) is called after having my eye out for one in the classifieds for over a year. One didn’t come up in Sprint Blue for all that time in watching, so as soon as this one came up for sale in Melbourne I jumped on it and had to negotiate between me and another person bidding for it in a day.

The price was agreed and we booked the flight to Melbourne, we, yes Brendon came with me on the trip just like he did with the Exige 6 months earlier.

The thought process of buying the RS4 was very different from buying the Exige. With the Exige I was agonising over trying to find the right spec, year, condition and options and I was never really 100% happy with Black. With the RS4, I knew I wanted a Blue Avant and as soon as I saw one available on the market and knowing how rare they are I just went for it, it somehow felt so right to buy the car, no second thoughts through any of it, it just felt right from beginning to end.

We arrived in Melbourne and did the usual quick test drive and money transfers at the bank and by lunchtime we were North of Melbourne and heading into the beautiful countryside of Northern Victoria.

We drove though the afternoon through really damp weather but it did prove how well the car can drive quick though slippery road conditions thanks to the clever Audi Quattro 4wd. We made it up through the snaking twisty mountain roads higher and higher until a ‘check engine oil level’ warning message came on the screen, better get oil in the morning!

Just before Thredbo our destination in the snowy mountains, we came across snow on the road and the car started to slide, I panicked and nudged the brakes a bit and the stability control fixed us all up and brought us bad to grip again, excellent.

We stayed the night at the Red Bank lodge again like last time in the Exige. In the morning we had a quick walk on the slopes to remind ourselves what snow is like again as we haven’t seen it in ages it felt. Brendon hadn’t seen snow in 10 years he reckoned, that’s going to seem really strange if your reading this from a cold country somewhere in the world.

Back Camera

In the morning we put in just over a litre of the good Black stuff and the ‘low
engine oil’ warning went away and the car was happy again.

My first bit of maintenance for the car on route to the snowy mountains

Back on the road we crossed  the border into NSW and the weather started getting warmer as we headed North towards Sydney. We pulled over for a short break and to look at the big wind turbines in the distance, Brendon got a bit excited and started doing star jumps:

Back Camera

Where we pulled over it was a bit muddy and it turned into a test of the 4WD system to see how it copes with muddy terrain. Well it passed with flying colours and gave the car a new paint style too:

Most impressive thing from driving the car some distance are the carbon ceramic brakes followed by ‘that’ engine from the R8. Even from cold the brakes bite so hard, a run down Macquarie pass (a local steep downhill road) proves that when hot they don’t alter their performance, they are much lighter and last 4 times longer than the steel items, amazing technology.

iPhone Pictures 019

Audi’s carbon ceramic brakes as found as an option on the
RS4, the R8 & the Lamborghini Gallardo & Murcielago

After a long drive of just over 1100km’s we had done the Melbourne to Sydney via the snowy mountains trip again. One thing is for sure, in a Audi with cruise control it goes  a lot quicker than in a Exige S with a engine buzzing away right up behind your head. It was time to give the car a wash after the long 2 day drive and the tuck it up in its new home in Sydney.

Back Camera

The car has already proved to be more useful than the Exige in a few ways, one example was at one of Sanna’s touch series games, I did a bit of video editing and DVD burning in the boot making my own  little portable video editing suite, very geeky but cool.
